Cost: ~$50-$60
Time: ~30 minutes
Part Number
called a Lateral trim panel, this is a non-US stocked part
and will take a couple weeks to arrive after you order it (yep, waiting is the
hardest part). Also, the BMW dealer will remind you that it is not installed on
US cars and will not fit; ya, I had a couple laughs too.
Color | Part Number |
Black | 51 43 2 499 065 (yes, different from the rest) |
Grey | 51 43 7 902 394 |
Blue | 51 43 7 902 395 |
Tan | 51 43 7 902 396 |
Green | 51 43 7 902 397 |
Extra parts needed: None, old hardware will fit the new part.
Tools: Flat head and phillips head screwdrivers
You can see why I want to replace this part
Start by removing the hood release by removing the screw.
Behind that will be a trim screw, turn 90 deg to release.
Release the black under panel by unscrewing the 4 screws just after the dashboard ends the one circled.
Turn the 2 trim holders at the bottom of the panel (circled) 90 deg to release.
Note: You only need to release the left side of the panel to be able to pull the deadpedal away. If you wish to remove the entire covering there is another screw in the carpet on the right side, the panel is also hooked up underneath and there is also a (temp?) sensor in the right rear of the panel. But this is really unnecessary and a lot of trouble.
Now for the hard part. The sill strip (see bottom left corner of
1st pic) needs to be removed.
It simply needs to be pulled straight up towards the top of the door frame. It
will not go willingly but will eventually come off.
3 clips hold it in place in to the body, they can slide freely but you have
limited range you can slide the sill strip so pull directly up.
Now to remove the panel. You basically want to pull directly back. Unfortunately the dashboard get sin the way of the top of the panel so some maneuvering is required but you will. I circled the 4 attachment points on the deadpedal and the mating picture is below. The rubber pieces may fall off, they can be found in the lower attachment point.
Do not fully pull the panel out. You need to release the truck switch by pressing on the top and bottom of the blue connector and pulling out.
Now reverse it all.
Reattach the trunk release after moving the switch over to the new panel.
Put the new panel in, maneuvering required.
Slide the black panel back into place, make sure to have the left rear corner slide up under the deadpedal panel.
Replace the 4 screws, 2 balck upholstry screws, flathead panel screw.
Replace the hood release lever and screw it in, do not over tighten it.
And finally replace that damn sill strip.
Note: The M-Tech logo is all black on the panel. I
painted it to match.
Incase you
were wondering, my car is oxford green which is why I have green floor mats. The
tan ones get dirty way too quickly.
